Alexander Stanhope Forbes

ALEXANDER STANHOPE FORBES RA
1857 - 1947

Stanhope Forbes was a founder member of the Newlyn School of painters. As a group they rejected the Victorian traditions and adopted the method of working en plein air. This was in part due to Forbes time as a student in Paris in 1880 and then extended periods in Brittany in 1881–83, encouraged by his friend Henry La Thangue. He discovered Newlyn on a tour of Cornwall in 1884 and from there an artists’ colony developed.
